Product description
The Hawley Retainer is a common type of removable orthodontic retainer used to maintain the position of teeth after completion of orthodontic treatment with braces. It is designed to prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions, which can happen once the active straightening phase is over due to the natural tendency of teeth to move.
**Key Features:**
1. **Clasps**: The Hawley Retainer typically has one or more metal clasps that fit over specific teeth, most commonly the molars. These clasps help to anchor the retainer in place.
2. **Acrylic Base**: The retainer has an acrylic baseplate that covers the palate (the roof of the mouth). This acrylic plate can be molded to fit the shape of the patient's palate for comfort and stability.
3. **Adjustable Wire**: Across the front of the teeth, there is a adjustable wire known as a "retaining bow" made of steel. This wire applies gentle pressure across the front teeth and can be adjusted by the orthodontist to control minor tooth movements or to close small gaps between teeth.
4. **Removable**: As a removable appliance, the Hawley Retainer can be taken out for eating and cleaning, allowing for easy maintenance of oral hygiene.
**Advantages:**
- **Versatility**: The Hawley Retainer can be used to maintain tooth alignment and also for minor tooth movements or adjustments post-treatment.
- **Prevention of Teeth Movement**: It effectively helps to keep teeth in their corrected positions, preventing relapse into pre-treatment positions.
- **Cost-effective**: Compared to fixed retainers or other types of orthodontic appliances, the Hawley Retainer is relatively inexpensive.
**Disadvantages:**
- **Adaptation Period**: New users might experience a short adaptation period during which they may experience a lisp or difficulty speaking clearly until they get used to wearing the retainer.
- **Potential for Discomfort**: Because it covers a portion of the palate, some patients may find the Hawley Retainer uncomfortable, especially if there is a high palatal vault.
- **Hygiene Maintenance**: Being a removable appliance, it requires diligent cleaning to avoid plaque accumulation and maintain oral health.
**Indications:**
The Hawley Retainer is prescribed by orthodontists primarily for post-orthodontic treatment retention to maintain the results achieved by braces. It can also be used for minor tooth movements or adjustments when needed.
**Maintenance:**
Patients are advised to clean their Hawley Retainer regularly with a clean toothbrush and mild soap to prevent plaque and bacterial buildup. Orthodontists may also recommend soaking the retainer in a cleansing solution occasionally for deeper cleaning.
The Hawley Retainer plays a crucial role in orthodontic treatment by ensuring the long-term stability of treatment outcomes, thereby helping patients maintain their new, improved smiles.

Digital production of dentures
Hesheng Dental Lab is also working digitally. Professionals know it: perfect dentures can be made in just a few steps with meticulous work! From scanning, milling, and 3D printing to customization and firing, everything is done in our laboratories with extreme precision and the highest level of dental technology. In the digital production of dentures, we use advanced technology: CAD/CAM scanners and milling technology as well as 3D printing processes.
A big practical advantage is the use of the 3Shape Unite app. Here, dentists can easily upload scan data and transfer it to our dental lab – for a smooth workflow. Then we will take care of the implementation.
Steps in the production of digital dentures:
(1) A laser scanner is used to scan the patient's dental impressions.
(2) Intelligent software transmits the data to the milling unit or to the 3D printer
(3) Dentures are milled or 3D printed from ceramic blocks using the latest precision technology.
(4) Machined dentures are hand-adjusted by experienced dental technicians to perfectly match the individually chosen tooth colour and fit.
(5) The ceramics are fired at high temperatures in a sintering furnace.
In the past, impressions were made so that dental technicians could accurately see the relationship between dentition and teeth. If you only scan and no longer use the denture model, you will not be able to check how well your new dentures fit with other teeth. This reduces the quality. With 3D printing, we're safe. This means that we can quickly and easily create plastic tooth models based on the scan data and get more accurate results.Hesheng Dental Lab is also working digitally.
